Women ‘break the silence’ on breast cancer

The much anticipated Break the Silence Cancer Talk took place on Saturday morning at Die Spens and was both enlightening and motivational.

The morning commenced with radiographer Dr Mkhize, of the Lorraine Homann Women’s Health Centre, sharing essential insights on screening and early detection.

She also explained the different types of breast cancer and the various factors, such as age, gender, genetics, and family history, that all contribute to the developing breast cancer.

In her talk, private practitioner with special interest in women’s health, Dr Izaan De Villiers, moved guests with her advice on high-risk factors, prevention, and the importance of equipping oneself with knowledge.

She proceeded to give a powerful demonstration on self-breast examinations and encouraged women to make monthly dates with their ‘breasties’ to immediately detect any irregular abnormalities.

Plaza owner and beloved and admired stalwart, Dina Tseng, had guests in tears as she shared the deepest and darkest parts of her emotional journey fighting three different cancers throughout her life.

This included melanoma, bone marrow cancer, and most recently, breast cancer.

She described how these afflictions had changed her mind-set… she now chooses to focus only on the positive things in life that make her and those around her happy as part of her survival journey.

Sister Heidi Thom, a palliative care nurse, closed the event with inspiring words on how to deal with cancer before, during, and after – whether you are a patient or just a supporting family member.

She explained what palliative care is and how it benefits not only a cancer patient but also the family who during palliative care are taught holistic coping skills and given one-on-one time to talk about their worries and fears while supporting a diagnosed loved one.
