Five people dead in two separate crashes on R34

One person died at the scene, while another passed away in hospital

The weekend ended in tragedy when three people died in a head-on collision on the R34 (Scheepersnek) on Sunday. It is alleged that one of the vehicles tried to avoid a pothole, which caused it to crash into an oncoming car. Emergency services had to extricate the occupants using the ‘jaws of life’. Aside from the fatalities, three people were critically injured and rushed to hospital. Later the same day, a bakkie veered off the R34 a few kilometres further on from the first accident. One person died at the scene, while another passed away in hospital. The cause of this accident is unknown and puzzling at this stage, as there are no potholes in that area and the bakkie shows no signs of a burst tyre. There is a bit of a bend in the road and it appears that the bakkie continued straight, leaving the road and ending up in a field before hitting a ditch.
The Vryheid Herald extends its condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
