A vibrant night of poetry and music with Afropolitan Explosive

The event gathered together local artists, musicians, and art fans for a night of live performances including poetry, singing, painting, and everything else under the arts umbrella.

The Baywash Lounge was a hub of vibrant creativity last Saturday evening (September 28), when local arts organisation, Afropolitan Explosive hosted a Chords and Chill event.

The highlight of the evening was a series of live performances by local musicians. The diverse line-up captured the audience, with soulful acoustic sets, lively jam sessions and passionate poetry renditions. Three talented local poets in the line-up stunned the audience when they recited their own unique but equally impassioned original Isizulu poems.

Guests were encouraged to join in the singing as local singer, Diva, rocked the crowd with a traditional musical item, called Umakhweyana (wooden bow), accompanied by drums, a guitar

Event organiser and Afropolitan Explosive Director, Nobuntu Mhalmbi, a highly respected artist, expressed her passion for supporting local talent. “Events like these are vital for emerging artists to hone their craft, showcase their skills, and gain invaluable feedback, preparing them for professional success,” she explained.

Afropolitan Explosive aims to foster a community of ‘creatives’ dedicated to sharing stories, hosting artistic events, and creating job opportunities in the Amajuba District and beyond. Since 2011, they have been involved in various projects, including crafting workshops and film initiatives.

“We want every artist in Newcastle to thrive, and we hope the community continues to engage with the wealth of creativity we have to offer,” she added.

“I believe there’s a growing awakening in Newcastle causing a rise in the interest in the teaching of history from the locals,” she concluded.
