Spring school break turns into ‘Snow-tember’

Sadly, Vryheid only had a few snowflakes in the residential area close to Vryheid Hill; and only for a brief moment

A sudden cold front transformed most of Northern KwaZulu-Natal into a white winter wonderland, with white-fluffy snow falling over the weekend – except it isn’t winter, but supposedly spring!
The spring school break was greeted with both excitement and despair as hundreds of motorists began their travels from inland to the coast on the N3. Vehicles got stuck in thick snow, leaving motorists stranded for days without water or food. While rescue services worked tirelessly to assist out on the roads, other residents in Estcourt, Ladysmith, Newcastle and Dundee enjoyed the beauty of the snow as it started falling on Friday night and carried on into Saturday. Sadly, Vryheid only had a few snowflakes in the residential area close to Vryheid Hill; and only for a brief moment. Reports of snow on Vryheid Hill were also received. A Vryheid Herald journalist followed the trail of the snow and found some around the Lancaster Hill area, where the ground was covered in white, soft, icy flakes.

The snow bug bit and the trail of snow was followed along the R34 towards Dundee, where a very thin layer of snow was found in Scheepersnek and at the Utrecht turn-off. Further along the route, closer to Cotswold, the mountainous area turned into a fairytale as tree branches hung low due to the weight of the snow and the fields were covered in whiteness. From there on and into Dundee, the snow measured about 38mm to 44mm deep.
The weekend was freezing, but the weather chart indicates that the coming weeks will be sunny and hot. Unbelievable!
