uThukela launches programme to fix boreholes and hand pumps

Over 115 broken boreholes have been repaired in less than a month

In a bold move to address water challenges in rural areas, uThukela District Municipality has initiated an aggressive programme aimed at repairing broken boreholes and hand pumps across the district.

This initiative, led by uThukela Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala, comes in response to ongoing water challenges faced by many communities, where access to clean and reliable water sources has been severely compromised.

For years, many rural communities within the district have relied on boreholes and hand pumps as their primary water source. However, due to a combination of ageing infrastructure, lack of maintenance and damage caused by environmental factors, many of these vital water points have fallen into disrepair.

This has left thousands of residents struggling with inadequate access to safe water, which has negatively impacted upon household activities and overall public health.

The programme has already achieved significant progress, with over 115 broken boreholes repaired in less than a month. This initiative is aimed at rehabilitating all malfunctioning and damaged boreholes and hand pumps within the district, ensuring that water supply is restored to the affected areas.

The municipality has also partnered with local communities and ward councillors to identify priority areas where repairs are most urgently needed. This collaborative approach ensures that the most affected communities will be the first to be helped.
