Zuma praises fallen MK women for their leadership

Speakers at the memorial service praised the women for their role in providing pensioners with tea each and every month, even though they were often challenged by the police

uMkhonto Wesizwe Party (MK) president Jacob Zuma has described the Estcourt party members who lost their lives in a taxi crash last month as ‘soldiers’. The crash happened on the R74 at Ntunjambili near Kranskop.

Zuma was speaking yesterday (September 14) at the memorial service which was held at the Wembezi Stadium, saying how the female MK members were killed while on their way to Zuma’s homestead in Nkandla to celebrate his wife, Sizakele maKhumalo Zuma.

Accompanied by his son, Duduzane; national and provincial leadership; the MK top 8; and Members of Parliament, Zuma explained why the MK women took the decision to visit and celebrate his wife. Speaking in a packed marquee, Zuma praised his wife for her decision to ‘wait for him’ when he was arrested, although he gave her the green light to continue with her life and find another man to marry.

Zuma went on to say that was one of the reasons why the MK women wanted to celebrate his wife: “After she heard that MK women were coming, she waited for them. When she got the news of the accident, she was shocked and even today she is still sad. Because she is a kindhearted person, she blames herself for the accident, thinking that these women died because of her. I said to her that is not true; they wanted to visit you out of love, especially because they knew you had also joined MK. Condolences to the families. These were soldiers; they showed us what leadership is and how the struggle is conducted.”

However, Zuma issued a strong warning to some party members to report their issues in the appropriate way. This after some members disrupted the memorial service because they refused to be addressed by KZN party secretary Thobani Zuma.

Families of the victims expressed their gratitude to the MK Party for being with them from day one. However, one family expressed their worries and pain that they cannot bury their loved one, as they are still awaiting the pathology results, and they pleaded with Zuma to intervene.
