Ward 17 War Room warns about illegal dumping

The community was also taught to make money out of waste by recycling instead of dumping

To promote a healthy lifestyle through community, as well as protect the environment and public health, the Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality Ward 17 War Room held a waste management awareness and clean-up campaign yesterday (August 29).

Falling under Operation Sukuma Sakhe (OSS) in Wembezi township, the campaign was held in conjunction with the Department of Economic Development, Tourism & Environment Affairs (EDTEA). The members started the first session by cleaning up rubbish in the roads in the Emahhashini section. The second session was an engagement with stakeholders at Emahhashini Primary School.

The programme was attended by Emahhashini principal Ms Zondi, the departments of Health and Social Development, Waste Unit, NGOs and NPOs.

Ward 17 convener Blessing Ndlovu said that, as the War Room, they look for challenges within the community. Ndlovu said they found that the community is facing health issues due to illegal dumping sites. “As a War Room, it is our responsibility to hold programmes like this that include the community. Workers always pick up the trash, but it keeps on increasing. Now we are looking at the cause of that problem,” said Ndlovu.

Emahhashini principal Ms Zondi said the school joined in as a health-promoting school and that they plan everything they do with sister departments. “What excites me the most, as we host this programme today, is that I just received the good news that the school passed with 94.3%. We thank God’s grace and we will continue from there to promote health because the illegal dumping that is happening outside our school affects us and our homes,” Zondi concluded.
