Police hold Women’s Month roadblock

Captain Mathe thanked all components and external role-players that assisted with the operation

Mooi River SAPS held a roadblock in Mooi River on Friday called Operation Basadi, which was part of Women’s Month celebrations. The roadblock was a success, with fines being issued, cases opened and arrests made.

It was a joint operation between the Flying Squad, K9 Unit, N3TC, Fire Department, Mooi River Public Order Policing, Nottingham Road SAPS, Immigration officers, Ladysmith Vehicle Theft Unit, Mooi River SAPS admin staff, SAPS Community Safety & Liaison, RTI Mpofana, RTI PMB and RTI Midway, as well as SAPS drone pilots from the Umgungundlovu District.

The operational commander of the roadblock was Captain CDT Mathe, the only female officer at Mooi River SAPS and currently the acting station commander.

The roadblock consisted of stop and search operations; high visibility patrols; searches for illegal firearms, drugs, alcohol and illegal immigrants; and a crime awareness campaign.

Male and female law enforcement officers joined hands to ensure everyone’s safety. Road traffic organisations sponsored water bottles and licence disk holders that were given to motorists. Crime awareness was raised about road safety, gender-based violence, online shopping safety, and receiving counterfeit goods.

Mooi River acting station commander CDT Mathe commented that 158 people and 238 vehicles were searched. The police made one arrest for operating a motor vehicle without a permit, two illegal immigrants were arrested, a truck was ‘detained’ with 9000 packs of cigarettes valued at about R280,000, and 10 RTI fines were issued.
