Devotees pray for peace and prosperity at the 25th Inder Pooja

This annual event is a communal prayer dedicated to seeking relief from poverty, combating viruses, promoting health, atoning for sins, securing divine protection, and requesting rain, grain, peace, and prosperity.

The 25th annual Inder Pooja and Maha Yajna took place at the intersection of Dixon and St. Thomas Streets in Lennoxton, drawing a large congregation of devotees united in their efforts to benefit Newcastle and its surrounding areas.

Representatives from Hindu Dharma Newcastle highlighted the pressing need for peace and prosperity amid the nation’s struggles with adversity, drought, natural disasters, unemployment, job losses, and the untimely loss of community members.

The day’s activities commenced with a peace walk, followed by the main prayer service led by priests from Newcastle, Dannhauser, and Dundee. The central ceremony focused on invoking rain, grain, health, peace, and prosperity.

Following the prayer service, devotees gathered around open fires to offer 1,008 Havan offerings—clarified butter mixed with herbal ingredients—into the flames while chanting mantras.

These mantras were intended to promote the well-being of families, the community, and all beings, as well as to express gratitude for existing blessings and remind participants of the impermanence of material possessions.

The Havan represents the values and morals that the community aspires to uphold. Priests also conducted the Ma Saraswathi pooja, dedicated to the goddess of knowledge, to bless students with success in their exams.

The event concluded with a procession to the nearby riverbank to complete the ritual, followed by a delightful lunch for all attendees.
