Police clamp down on cable thieves in town

Cable theft has severe consequences, including unscheduled blackouts and hindering economic growth in all government spheres

Some municipal workers were among the suspects who were apprehended for cable theft in and around Vryheid during an operation last week. The joint operation was carried out by local SAPS (South African Police Services), a private security company and municipal officials. Just like any other town, AbaQulusi Local Municipality is not immune to the challenge of cable theft, which keeps on causing disruptions to essential services and hindering economic development, as well as leaving many residents without electricity for days and even weeks.
AbaQulusi Mayor Khehla Mkwanazi commented that, “We condemn any form of criminal activity, especially when it involves those entrusted to serve our communities. We are dismayed and disappointed that criminal elements are plaguing our beautiful communities, setting back developmental prospects.”

Cable theft has severe consequences, including unscheduled blackouts and hindering economic growth in all government spheres. Cable theft also interferes with the supply of internet connectivity, as well as telephonic communication, as well as compromising public safety and diverting resources meant for development. Mkhwanazi concluded by stating that, “To combat this scourge, we will enhance collaboration with law enforcement agencies, implement additional security measures, conduct regular inspections and monitoring, and engage with communities to report suspicious activity. We appeal to our communities to join us in fighting cable theft. Report any information regarding criminal activity to the authorities. Together, we can protect our infrastructure and ensure a brighter future for all.”
