Woman kills mother and steals newborn baby?

The community thought that Dlamini would return home after the police found her baby

It is still unclear how a young woman died after going missing, along with her infant. The baby was found alive, but the woman’s body turned up in a ditch, leading to lots of questions being asked.
Nokubonga Dlamini (19) gave birth three months ago and later went missing with her baby in Bhekuzulu.

According to neighbour Thembelihle Khumalo, Dlamini was new to the area. Khumalo also said that the young woman was approached by another woman who promised her baby clothes. Dlamini went missing on July 10 and police traced the baby to a woman. It is unclear whether this is the same woman (who promised the baby clothes).
On July 16, the woman was arrested and taken into custody, but a few days later, she allegedly committed suicide in the cells. The community thought that Dlamini would return home after the police found her baby, but she was still missing.

This sparked the community to engage with ANC member Sanele Zulu from Ward 11 after Zulu heard about the missing baby and mother. Zulu and other members took the initiative to assist in searching for the young girl. Zulu went to the police to enquire about the missing girl and to get permission for the community to start a search party. The community started searching on July 31 at approximately 08:00 and found the girl lying in a ditch at about 10:00. According to a witness, the girl’s mouth was covered with a cloth but they recognised her face immediately. The search party and community members alerted the police, as well as Joe Myeni from the Community Policing Forum (CPF), AbaQulusi Fire & Rescue, Vryheid K9 Search & Rescue and Frikkie Bekker from KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services. The rescue team managed to lift the body from the trench. The top part of the body was halfway covered with water even though her face was not submerged. Her decomposed body was taken to the morgue for an autopsy. An inquest docket was opened until the cause of death can be determined.

Zulu said that the ANC branch wants to send their condolences to the family and they will try to assist with the funeral arrangements. “The law must take its course. I urge community members not to take the law into their own hands because there are a lot of rumours going around that the community want to act. Be calm and let the law take its course. But we want to know what is happening with the case until it is finalised by the police.”
