Memel to Newcastle walk postponed to August 2025

The Memel to Newcastle event has had a set date of August 9 annually; however, we decided to change the date due to the Comrades Marathon.

The popular annual Memel to Newcastle Walk, held every August, has been postponed until next year.

The Champ Group of Companies, which traditionally hosts the Walk, said in a statement that they had held a meeting with another company that was to have hosted the event where it was discovered that the proper procedures involving the SAPS, the KZN and Free State Roads Authorities and the Department of Sport and Recreation had not been met.

“Apart from all this, the ambulance services need to be contracted and more than 150 marshals present. Public insurance is a must for any event of this calibre,” the Champ group said.

” The official Memel to Newcastle Walk hosted by the Champ Group would like to make it known to the public that we are not associated with the proposed event by the other company. The understanding is that they will cancel the event due to a lack of planning and protocol.”

The Champ Group said negotiations are in place with the Comrades Marathon Association for the event to become a Comrades Qualifier for 2025.

“The Comrades Marathon Association usually only takes events happening between September and May as potential qualifiers into consideration to become eligible for a qualifying event.

“The Memel to Newcastle event has had a set date of August 9 annually; however, we decided to change the date due to the Comrades Marathon.

“We are looking forward to hosting another successful Memel to Newcastle event soon.”
