Brett Shuttleworth; the embodiment of live, love, laugh

From rural beginnings to Hollywood stardom to a journey of humble healing; Brett Shuttleworth has experienced it all.

Brett was born in Pietermaritzburg in May 1972.

However; his family would soon set their roots in Newcastle where Brett grew up on the family farm on Blue Ridge, just outside of town.

His primary schooling started at Newcastle Senior Primary School and ended in 1990 when he matriculated as a prefect at Newcastle High School.

Reminiscing on some of his fondest memories growing up in Newcastle, Brett said he recalled sitting on a blanket on the grass with his fellow matriculants in front of the cars at the drive-in; watching ‘bioscope’ was at the top of his ‘fun-things-to-do-list.’

“I also remember acting like Tarzan swinging over the Ncandu River that runs through Newcastle, water skiing, and fishing at Chelmsford Dam. A few of my greatest memories was representing my school and my province on the sports field – playing in the Craven Week rugby tournament and Nuffield Week cricket tournament for Northern Natal and being apart of the best cadet school band in South Africa.”

Missing Newcastle:

When asked what he missed most about Newcastle, Brett simply referred to “the mountains that surround Newcastle.” Growing up, Brett said he was truly blessed to be a part of a family that stayed connected, supportive, and loving.

“Although some of my family lives abroad, every second year we travel and arrange a festive Christmas together which undoubtedly will be on the family farm this year. My whole family comes from Newcastle – my brothers and sisters all grew up in Newcastle together,” he said.

“I love mountain biking, gym, swimming, ice baths, and long walks on the beach. I try to have the most optimal life, mind, body, and soul so my lifestyle becomes a hobby for me.”

When asked about his relationship status, he simply said he was single, happy, and free. However, he boasted that he was the proud father to a daughter, Noah Sunshine, and she is his ‘everything.’

Exploring the world:

After school, Brett delved into a variety of life-altering careers, which included professional rugby, a Hollywood acting career and becoming one of the most sought-after male supermodels across the globe.

While he was in the national rugby squad, he was awarded a bursary to play rugby in America.

“I had just qualified to play for the US national team at the World Cup (my boyhood dream) when my arm was crushed in 27 places in the last warm-up game before the World Cup. This changed the trajectory of my life, and the most unexpected path opened up.”

He changed career paths and became one of the top supermodels in the world, which saw him moving to Hollywood.

Shortly afterwards, he had the opportunity of becoming an actor, with his most notable role being able to play himself in the coming-of-age teen comedy film, American Pie II.

“To have an unexpected career take-off that would pay for you to experience so many different countries, sights, experiences, and sounds was an absolute gift to me,” he said.

A heart-breaking fall from grace led to his most powerful journey yet:

“I experienced the lifestyle, as the saying goes, ‘drugs, sex, and rock n roll’, which played a profound part in my life. I was looking for something to fulfil me, but not even the fame could fulfil that yearning. Looking back, I was yearning to be free, joyful, and have a daily sense of well-being.”

Brett said his spiritual pilgrimage – trying to understand what life was all about – is what pulled him out of that dark place he found himself in.

“I questioned, what was the purpose of us human beings? We all think that we are here to discover something bigger than why we are here. There must be a bigger purpose than what we are currently experiencing. I went in search of that.”

Once he discovered the answers to his questions, he said he discovered for the first time who he truly was and what his actual purpose in life was.

“It was only then that I started living a truly authentic life in terms of following my heart and my dreams,” he said.

He continued: “I learned that when you discover your true self and the light of your soul, all you want to do is let people discover the same grace in their lives. I am a self-realisation teacher – teaching people how to live their best lives.”

He believes it was the cure for everything, and the only way one could achieve this was through self-enquiry and surrender.

Living, loving, laughing and helping others heal:

Currently, Brett hosts the international Smiling Soul Retreats all year round and around the world.
