Best friend arrested as devastated family mourn son’s murder

The murder of Jonah Mothilal (27) sent shockwaves through Newcastle. However, the arrest of his childhood friend, Mohammed Patel, in connection with his murder has left many reeling in disbelief.

In a heart-wrenching turn of events, what initially appeared to be a kidnapping on July 8, has led to a shocking murder investigation leaving many with more questions than answers.

Jonah’s father, Sam Mothilal, a pastor, sat down with the Newcastle Advertiser to speak out on the murder of his son and the weekend that forever changed their lives.

Jonah’s body was discovered on the N11 close to Volksrust on Monday, July 8. He had been shot. Earlier, a missing persons report was circulated on social media after no one had heard from Jonah after he and his friend, Patel, had travelled to Johannesburg at about 8 pm on Saturday to buy a car – reportedly a blue BMW X5.

After not returning home, that Sunday night, his family went to the police to open a case of a missing person.

As the last person to have been with Jonah, Mohammed was summoned to the police station. In a statement to the police, he stated that he left Jonah at the side of the road to look at another car he was considering buying.

Patel was arrested on July 8 and has twice appeared at Newcastle Magistrates Court to apply for bail. He faces two counts of robbery and murder. His most recent bail application on July 23 was postponed for August 1.
