Team Sugar protests against ‘corruption’.

Members of Team Sugar took to the streets of Newcastle on Friday (July 12) in what they claim was a march against corruption.

Clad in their party regalia, the Team Sugar contingent, minus their gregarious party president, Musa Sugar Thwala, marched down Allen Street to the municipal buildings, protesting what they said is the municipality’s employment and tender corruption, the council’s abuse of power and the lack of service delivery.

Reading the memorandum, Siyabulela Jack, the regional secretary for Team Sugar SA, demanded an end to the intermittent water services, citing corruption in the municipality’s tendering process as the cause.

He then took aim at the four Team Sugar councillors that remain in the council. The four councillors were instrumental in the removal of Team Sugar president Musa Sugar Thwala from the council and effectively as Deputy Mayor.

“In council sittings, there is a relentless countenance of bogus councillors who masquerade as our party representatives, even after Team Sugar SA divulged a letter of intent to inform the municipal council about the expulsion and the removal of four representatives,” said Jack.

“We demand the immediate removal of the four ‘fake councillors’ who continue to masquerade as our party representatives. Councillors must organise a long overdue meeting for the swearing in of new and genuine councillors and rescind and nullify all council resolutions taken in the presence and with the participation of these bogus councillors,” he continued.

The Pietermaritzburg High Court dismissed the case to have the four councillors removed from the party and effectively council on Monday (July 15).

Thwala suffered a further setback when Team Sugar SA lost the ward 28 by-election in which he was a candidate. With 355 votes, TSSA finished third behind the IFP (852) and MKP (613).
