From humble beginnings to netball stardom: Tumi Thusi’s inspiring journey

In a remarkable display of perseverance and dedication, Newcastle's Amahle 'Tumi' Thusi has risen through the ranks of netball, from a hesitant first-grade beginner to a confident team captain, leading the Dolphins U17 to 2024 finals.

Tumi’s journey began inauspiciously, as a small and uncertain first-grade student who struggled to find her footing on the court.

Athletics became her focus where she excelled, earning Provincial colours and gaining valuable confidence.

However, the allure of netball proved too great, and she returned to the sport in fifth grade, discovering a natural aptitude for the game.

Flexibility and adaptability became Tumi’s hallmarks as she effortlessly transitioned between positions, earning recognition as one of the best players in her age group.

The COVID-19 lockdown hiatus couldn’t dampen her spirits, and upon returning to the court in grade eight, she trialled for the U14 Amajuba District team, marking the beginning of her remarkable netball journey.

The real test came when Tumi made the first team at Newcastle High School in grade nine, facing off against seasoned 18-year-olds.

Undaunted, she rose to the challenge, earning a spot in the KZN netball team that same year. Since then, she has consistently made the team, showcasing her unwavering dedication and skill.

This year, Tumi led the Dolphins U17 as captain to the finals, ultimately falling short by a single point (34-35). While she says the heart-breaking defeat stung, her pride and sense of accomplishment shone brighter.

“Being captain of the Dolphins U17 has been an honour,” she reflected. “The journey wasn’t easy, but it’s made me stronger and more resilient.”

With her talent, work ethic, and unyielding spirit, there’s no doubt she will continue to inspire and thrill fans, leaving an indelible mark on the world of netball.
