President Lizette is eager to spearhead community service projects

Lizette joined the Newcastle Lions Club on January 1, 2023, as she wanted to continue serving the community.

Determined and motivated are two words used to describe the newly elected president of the Newcastle Lions Club, Lizette van der Berg, who was sworn in during an elegant induction dinner hosted on July 5.

Lizette being congratulated during the Induction evening.

Lizette was born in Pretoria but moved to Newcastle in 1973 and matriculated at Ferrum High School in 1990.

After school, she joined the South African Police Service in 1990 and is still an active member of the service.

“My passion is to serve members of the community, and this passion is what persuaded me to join the South African Police Service. Despite facing numerous challenges, I always believed in myself and overcame any obstacles I faced,” she said.

She said her first contribution to the community was when she became a committee member of the Newcastle Winter Festival in 2017 where she remained an active member for three years.

She joined the Newcastle Lions Club on January 1, 2023, as she wanted to continue serving the community.

“I am a compassionate and driven individual who values perseverance. I believe in the importance of empathy and hard work. I aspire to lead projects that drive positive social change, while personally I aim to continue learning and growing in every way. I strive to inspire and support others, fostering a sense of community and collaboration wherever I go,” she said.

What does it mean to be the new president of the Newcastle Lions Club?

Being the new president of the Newcastle Lions Club means she assumes a leadership role within a prominent local organisation that is part of a larger Lions Clubs International network.

“To be the President of the Newcastle Lions Club fills me with pride and a deep sense of responsibility. I will be responsible for spearheading community service projects and initiatives.”

This, according to her, may involve identifying local needs, organising local events, and mobilising club members to participate in volunteering activities.

“Overall, being president is a prestigious and rewarding position that allows me to make a significant impact on our community of Newcastle. The Newcastle Lions Club has a long and proud history of service, and it is a privilege to lead such a dedicated and passionate group of ladies,” she explained.

What have you learned from the former President, Nicolette Baney that you will continue to implement during your time as president?

Lizette believes Baney excelled at listening to diverse viewpoints and integrating them into her decision-making process, fostering a strong sense of unity and teamwork amongst members.

She also showed her the significance of building a strong relationship with her community, the importance of having a clear strategic vision, and the power of a positive attitude.

“My predecessor always approached challenges with optimism and a can-do spirit, which was contagious and uplifting for the entire club. I want to continue with this legacy of hers. Her dedication and vision have set a high standard for all of us to follow, and I am committed to building upon this solid foundation she has laid,” said Lizette.

What do you hope to achieve during your time as president?

In the coming year, Lizette said her focus would be on strengthening the club’s existing projects and exploring initiatives that align with their mission.

“I believe in the power of collaboration, and I am eager to work closely with the club members to harness our collective strengths and talents.”

Whether it’s supporting local charities, organising community events, or advocating for important causes, Lizette said she was confident that together they could achieve great things.

“I want us to work tirelessly to ensure that the Lions Club continues to be a beacon of hope and service in our community and continues to uphold the Lions Motto: WE SERVE.

“As we look ahead, I am filled with excitement and optimism about the opportunities that lie before us. Together, we can make a profound impact on our community. Our collective efforts, big or small, can create meaningful change and improve the lives of those in need. I believe all South Africans must practice Ubuntu, and together we can make our country great,” she concluded.
