New lion set to lead the ‘pride’

Before pledging to implement the Lions code of conduct, each member received their certificates and the much-anticipated Lions pins.

The Newcastle Lions Club welcomed the induction of a new leader, Lizette van der Berg, during an elegant induction evening hosted at Avalon Guest Manor on Friday, July 5.

The club also welcomed three new members, Sarah Baney, Jakkie de Bruin and Katelyn Knox, to their pride, bringing their membership to 16.

The outgoing president, Nicolette Baney, welcomed guests before discussing the various projects the club had been involved in over the past year.

She expressed her excitement over finally being able to hand over the presidential reigns after serving in the role for the past four years.

To add to the evening’s excitement, Baney was thrilled to have a representative from each local NPO present at the dinner, all vowing to work together towards a common goal: charity.

The evening was presided over by District Governor, Perry Chetty, who led the official candle-lighting ceremony and the official welcoming of the new members while congratulating the existing members on a job well done.

Before pledging to implement the Lions code of conduct, each member received their certificates and the much-anticipated Lions pins.

Chetty also presented certificates of appreciation to the existing members.

The new board members were announced as follows:

  • Lizette van der Berg (President),
  • Lize Smith (Treasurer),
  • Jennifer Annandale (Secretary),
  • Chantelle du Toit (Marketing Chair),
  • Carol Ann Hattingh (Membership Chair),
  • Nicolette Baney (Service Chair).
  • A long-standing member, Courtney Elliott, was also named Zone Chairman.

The evening concluded with guests enjoying a deliciously prepared three-course meal paired with drinks and a few good laughs among friends.

“I would like to thank the community for their support during my term and wish our incoming president as many fulfilling moments in her term as I had. I know that she has service in her heart and will serve the community with love and kindness,” concluded Baney.
