uThukela introduces contractors to repair sewer system in Weenen

The mayor emphasised that sanitation is dignity, and meeting the demands of a growing population will ensure a safe and healthy environment for residents

uThukela District Municipality introduced contractors yesterday (July 9) that will undertake the work of eradicating sewer spillages in the Weenen area after a long history of reporting this problem.

Led by Mayor Inkosi NB Shabalala, a municipal delegation visited the Ward 21 Ezitendeni area of Weenen, under Inkosi Langalibalele Local Municipality, with the aim of introducing the contractors.

The project was awarded to two service providers, namely Madudla Contractors and Sinethemba Construction. They will be responsible for the refurbishment, overall maintenance and repairs of sewer connections and pump stations, as well as unblocking sewer pipelines.

The duration of the project for Madudla Contractors will be 12 months and it is envisaged that 20 temporary job opportunities will be created. Sinethemba Construction will undertake a six-month project and about eight temporary job opportunities will be created.

Once the whole project is completed, it will benefit about 800 households.

Mayor Shabalala told the media that, “We gave the one company R15 million and the other R16 million. All those funds combined will assist the Weenen community and get rid of the bucket system. There will also be a pond system that will help to collect waste water from households for treatment whenever there is load-shedding.”

The mayor was also accompanied by humanitarian and non-profit organisations such as the Al-Imdaad Foundation and Caring Women Forum. Al-Imdaad donated warm blankets and walking sticks to senior citizens, as well as hygiene packs and beanies for the youth.
