MEC’s visit renews hope of progress in reviving local economy

Hopes are high that newly-appointed KZN MEC of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environment, Musa Zondi, will lend credence to his commitment to a 'hands-on approach' to economic development in the district.

MEC Zondi visited the Amajuba District on Friday (July 5), where he met Amajuba District Mayor Ndabuko Zulu, Newcastle Mayor Xolani Dube, and Emdlangeni Mayor, Mzwakhe Buthelezi.

The delegation visited the industrial sites in the district and had discussions about the challenges faced by the industry, the opportunities, and the various development projects in the district.

“It is a great pleasure to welcome the MEC to our district, where the spirit of progress and development can be felt. We are grateful for the visit, as we are on a journey to boost our local economy and put our district on the map,” said Zulu.

MEC Zondi assured the leaders of the district that his ministry would do everything possible to deal with the problems faced by the different industries in the district while also having a more balanced focus, as historically the ministry has placed its focus on the southern coastal areas.

“We, as a department, have come to see for ourselves and experience the challenges that people and industries are facing. I am a person who believes in coming and seeing something first-hand rather than reading it on a report,” said Zondi.

Following the meeting, the envoys took Zondi to various places, including the Newcastle Chemical Hub and Madadeni Industrial Economic Phase 1, to assess the progress of the construction of the economic monument.
