Residents empowered with crucial information on housing, subsidies

The success of this programme will empower potential beneficiaries with the knowledge and understanding they need to take care of their homes.

Crucial information on housing and subsidies was passed on to residents when the Newcastle municipality launched the Consumer Education Programme in Ward 16, Blaaubosch on June 26.

This initiative, according to the municipality’s communications department was developed by the Provincial Human Settlements Department, ‘designed to empower residents with essential knowledge about the housing project processes.’

“The programme aims to provide a clear vision and an integrated approach to raising awareness about government housing subsidy programmes, to keep the community well-informed and empowered,” the municipality said in a statement.

The Consumer Education Programme was designed to help potential beneficiaries understand their rights, responsibilities, and obligations when partnering with the government to meet their housing needs.

In line with Provincial Human Settlements guidelines, these educational sessions will be conducted quarterly until the completion of the housing projects.

The 2024 programme was especially significant, as several projects in various wards were in advanced stages.

The primary goals of the Consumer Education Programme are to:

  • Inform beneficiaries about the different government subsidies available.
  • Help them understand the distinctions between homeownership and renting.
  • Build on the foundation of ongoing housing consumer education provided by various service providers.

The programme will cover essential topics such as:

  • Housing needs
  • Basic house maintenance, improvements, and gardening
  • Title deeds and contract management
  • Human Settlement Processes
  • Government subsidies, applications, legal frameworks, and policies
  • Tenure options
  • Land processes

Mayor, Cllr. Xolani Dube, commented that the programme will ensure beneficiaries make the right decisions and understand their rights and responsibilities. “By doing so, our community can work together with the government to achieve sustainable and effective housing solutions.”

Additionally, it aligns with the Newcastle Local Municipality’s policy on public participation, which emphasises the involvement of communities in service delivery matters.

“We encourage all residents to participate in this valuable programme and take the opportunity to learn more about their housing options and responsibilities. Stay tuned for more details on the upcoming sessions,” Mayor Dube concluded.
