The Newcastle Library, in collaboration with The Book Behind Awards and the Department of Arts and Culture, hosted a Read-A-Walk programme under the theme “Wear your reading hat” at Qhawelesizwe Primary School in Vezubuhle.

The fun and exciting programme started with a 1-kilometre reading relay where learners took turns leading the walk while reading aloud from a book.

Nkosiphambili Ndlovu, Director of Arts, Culture, and Amenities for Newcastle Municipality, encouraged learners and parents to become avid book readers.

The event featured reading performances, including poetry and music by Qhawelesizwe learners, and prizes were also up for grabs for the best-decorated reading hats, helping to encourage creativity.

Newcastle Mayor Cllr. Xolani Dube commented that the “Read-A-Walk programme played a pivotal role in improving language skills, preparing learners for academic success, increasing concentration and discipline, as well as cultivating a lifelong love of reading.
