BREAKING NEWS: Newcastle farmer killed in farm attack

Tollie Nel (senior) was shot dead in his home yesterday evening.

Respected Newcastle farmer and businessman Tollie Nel (senior) was killed in what appears to have been an armed robbery at his farm between 19:00 and 20:00 yesterday evening.

A manhunt for the killers is currently underway by SAPS, farmers, friends of the family and security agencies.

Police and security agencies are using drones to assist in tracking down the suspected robbers.

Nel was shot dead in his home, which is situated on the maize farm he owns and operates along the R34 between Newcastle and Utrecht.

While Nel’s home is still being attended to as an active crime scene, initial reports indicate that five balaclava-clad men entered the home sometime after 19:00 and demanded money and weapons.

Officers at scene stated that the attackers shot Nel multiple times before escaping on foot with five firearms which they stole from the family.

A local vet was called upon to treat the family’s dog, which was injured allegedly in its attempt to defend Nel.

Security personnel involved in the search stated that the attackers had cast off their balaclavas, which were discovered along the R34.

Investigations are ongoing.

The Newcastle Advertiser extends its condolences to the Nel family for this tragic loss.
