Newcastle SAPS say NO child trafficking in Newcastle

The Newcastle SAPS have confirmed there are no reported cases of child kidnappings in Newcastle.

This follows a widely circulated letter from a Newcastle primary school alerting parents to an incident that occurred at the school.

The letter states: “We have been made aware that incidents of child trafficking have been happening in Madadeni and Osizweni. We are shocked to hear that child trafficking is happening right here on our doorstep, and we are very concerned about the safety of our learners.”

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS spokesperson, offered much-needed clarification, stating:

“We have no confirmed cases of any child kidnappings in the area. We have been told that there was an incident. However, it was a family matter. Our on-the-ground FCS (Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences) Unit handles cases such as child trafficking.”

Two representatives of the FCS Unit have also confirmed that they have not been informed of any cases.

The Newcastle Advertiser reached out to the Deputy Principal of the school who circulated the letter.

After confirming that the letter was meant for only the parents at the school, she declined to further comment on the matter.
