Young models set sights on Miss Newcastle title

The pageant is aimed at providing aspiring models with an opportunity to highlight their talent, promote a sense of community spirit.

Anticipation and excitement were palpable when a group of young girls came together at the Carnegie Art Museum on April 6 to compete for the final selection of the Miss Newcastle 2024.

Mbuso Nyandu, the founder modelling agent and event coordinator for the Miss Newcastle 2024 and Miss Indoni Yamanzi 2024, spoke to the Newcastle Advertiser on the upcoming pageant.

“We are so excited about our third edition of the Miss Newcastle pageant – an event we see as a chance to give underprivileged children a platform, children who might one day become the next Miss South Africa”, said Nyandu.

“We want to give them hope, that even though they are in a small town and are from a disadvantaged background,  they can achieve great things. We want to channel these children’s energy into something positive and one day they will be polished, respectable women.”

Miss Newcastle 2023 winner Stacey Nkabinde says the pageant has had a significant positive impact on her life. “Last years’ experience was unique, and the pageant truly forced me to push myself beyond my comfort zone.”

The aspiring model hopes to use this pageant as a springboard to bigger national pageants, possibly becoming the next Zozibini Tunzi (a former South African Miss Universe)

“I want to see myself on a global stage, representing Newcastle and South Africa,” she said.

The number of entries has increased, indicating that the pageant has experienced extraordinary growth even though it is still in its early stages.

Nyandu is optimistic that despite having only hosted two pageants thus far, it will expand and draw in additional sponsors and contributors. A hair care brand is presently sponsoring the event, but they are still seeking additional companies to help with gifts and prizes for the winners.

“Thanks to the parents who trust us to work with their children,” said an excited Nyandu.

The pageant’s details are currently being finalised by the event organisers, who will provide information on the main event’s dates, time, and location.
