High School raid highlights drug problem in Newcastle schools

Drugs and other 'worrying substances' were seized from Hope High School in Ncandu Park during a raid last Tuesday (April 9) by the anti-crime group, Abaqondisi.

The group had initially searched a playground adjacent to the school for illegal substances where learners ‘hang out’ waiting for transport, said Sakhile Mbatha, Abaqondisi Madadeni section chairperson.

He said ‘several illegal substances’ were confiscated from the park.

Mbatha said the Hope High School principal and the local Community Policing Forum requested that they carry out the search and raid at the school because they were concerned about drugs being peddled at the playground.

Dagga, cigarettes and cough mixture were seized during the raid.

Providing clarity, Hope High School principal, Mr. Ntshangase, said that the raid was conducted after a community policing forum meeting held on Sunday, April 7.

“The CPF took a resolution to address the crime in Ncandu Park. They talked about raiding the school since these drug addicts are supplying learners with drugs,” commented Ntshangase.

During the school raid, Mbatha said two youths, said to be working for the dealer, were found with packets of dagga.

“We decided to hang around until after 2 pm. That is when we caught the alleged main dealer who everyone confirms is the one selling to the learners.”

The dealer was allegedly caught in possession of dagga, rizla rolling paper, Ncika (a concoction of cough mixture), cigarettes and money.
