SANBS extends working hours ahead of Easter break

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) has extended its operating hours in efforts to stock up ahead of the school and Easter holidays.

South African National Blood Service (SANBS )  hopes the extended working hours in the run to Easter will  encourage donors nationwide, to make use of this opportunity to step forward and donate.

“We acknowledge that the current operating hours may be constrained for some donors who are due to donate or would like to donate for the first time,” said Siemi Prithvi Raj, SANBS Executive for Transfusion Donor Services and Marketing.

“This extension comes at a crucial time for SANBS as we look to expand our donor base and increase blood collections ahead of school closures and the Easter period,” Prithvi Raj added.

SANBS is preparing for this historically difficult time of year, which coincides with Easter break. Since a sizable portion of the country’s donor base consists of students, school breaks have historically been associated with low stock levels.

In order to boost blood supplies, SANBS will consequently extend its operating hours countrywide from March 4 to March 15.

This gives contributors the freedom to give when it’s most convenient for them.

Most donation sites will operate until 19:00 on weekdays

“We will be able to collect sufficient Group O blood with the help of our donors,” Prithvi Raj continued.

“Group O blood represents the universal donor; group O blood can be given to group A, B, AB, or O patients.”
