Newcastle a sports mecca after Monte Vista revamp project commences

Sport is set for a major boost with the revamping of the former Monte Vista Casino complex into a world-class state-of-the-art sports facility.

Having produced a variety of national and international stars, Newcastle has always been perceived as one of the towns that produce world-class talent that has contributed immensely to South African sport.

Mthandeni Myende, municipal communications officer, said it is against ‘this background that the municipality continues to place significance on the town’s commitment to supporting innovative community development and economic sustainability.’

“As a mission-driven and reliable local government, the Newcastle Municipality has embarked on this pivotal redevelopment project that will cater to the needs of all sporting codes, therefore enhancing sports and wellness amongst the citizens of Newcastle and its youth.

“The revitalization of this facility (the old Casino complex) will not only benefit residents but will also contribute immensely to the development of young talent by granting access to local schools to host sports days and other activities,” Myende said.

“Fitness enthusiasts will also have access to the outdoor gym, while event specialists will be given access to the allocated side of the facility for private events such as year-end parties, weddings, tournaments, and social gatherings.”

According to Myende, the project is to be executed in two phases, Phase 1A and Phase 1B. Phase 1A was awarded to Mela Okuhle Enterprises and commenced on November 22, 2022, with an anticipated completion date of September 22.

The scope of work anticipated was as follows:

Phase 1B was awarded to Msalela Transport cc and commenced on September 6, 2023; the anticipated completion date is December 6.

“This is in line with the municipality’s plans to create more jobs for its citizens.” Newcastle mayor, Cllr. Xolani Dube said he was excited about this project dubbing it “a new hope for Newcastle.”

“Sport is the only efficient tool we can use to fight against the scourge of violence, drug abuse, and criminality. Our youth will now spend more time nurturing their talents and building their future,” said Dube.

“The municipality’s plans to upgrade sports facilities around the city are at an ultimate stage,” Myende concluded
