Fun Facts with Angus Burns: Orange-Breasted Sunbirds

If you ever visit Kirstenbosch or the Fynbos biome, make a point of looking for these amazing birds!

I was recently privileged to visit Kirstensbosch National Botanical Gardens in the Western Cape and came across a number of the most beautifully coloured, Orange-Breasted Sunbirds (Anthobaphes violacea) feeding from the flowers in the garden.

I of course had to capture a photo to share with you.

These little birds feed mostly on nectar and are endemic (i.e. found only in a defined geographic area) to the Fynbos of the Western Cape.

The gardens are currently full of them, and they are a delight to see firsthand. Besides being beautiful to behold, they perform an important pollination function.

The nest is mostly built by females and they usually produce 2 eggs that hatch in just over 14 days.
