Municipality steps up fight against pothole scourge

The pilot project’s scope of work also entails maintenance such as road marking, pavement cleaning, and repairing faulty traffic lights.

The Newcastle Municipality has launched a pioneering preventative and maintenance programme to fight the pothole scourge.
Despite the challenges of a backlog in funding for the resurfacing and rehabilitation of the town’s road infrastructure, the Newcastle Municipality says priority has been given to providing ‘short-term solutions to repair potholes and clean storm water channels.’
“Due to the wet conditions over the summer, the municipality has commenced with temporarily repairing potholes by filling them with a stabilized mixture to ensure that the road surface remains in a drivable state. However, more permanent fixing will be done later in the dryer seasons,” the municipality said in a statement.
“The municipality has also dispatched technical teams to clear blocked storm water drains as flooded roads can be a major contributor to the deterioration of road infrastructure.”
The pilot project’s scope of work also entails maintenance such as road marking, pavement cleaning, and repairing faulty traffic lights.

Mayor, Cllr D.X. Dube applauded the initiative, stating that the programme is ‘in alignment with the leadership’s vision for sustainable development, which unlocks various economic opportunities for locals and promotes an environment conducive for (new) investments.’
