Long walk for the children of Gaza

In the middle of the humanitarian crisis that has dominated international headlines, Itani Rasalanavho has made national headlines as a man on a mission to improve the lives of the most vulnerable in Gaza.

The 39-year-old social activist and coordinator for the World Federation for Democratic Youth in East Africa has promised to be the change he wishes to see in the world, taking a cue from Nelson Mandela’s book “The Long Walk to Freedom.”

He has made it his mission to gather money for Gaza’s thousands of amputee children in need of prosthetic limbs and other medical attention.

“The idea for the walk started with two of my friends in Bethlehem. During engagements, we were talking about the 520km wall that snakes the West Bank.”

“I then had an epiphany that 520 km is the same distance from Johannesburg to Durban. From there, I decided to walk to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza.”

After coming up with the idea for the walk, he talked with several stakeholders, who were more than eager to provide support. So began his trek from Soweto on January 25.

According to the United Nations, Gaza is currently the most dangerous place to live for children. In December, UNICEF spokesperson James Elder gave a first-hand account of the impact of war on families and children.

” Around 1 000 children in Gaza have lost one or both their legs,” he stated

Itani has called on South Africans to help and make a difference.

“The ocean is full of not streams but of droplets. What we are doing is a droplet on its own. If everyone does one thing or concentrates on one problem, then we have a bigger impact. We all have to do something.”
