Newcastle Siva Subramanian Temple marks annual Kavady festival

The Siva Subramanian Temple in Surryaville held its annual Thaipoosam Kavady from January 16 until the public celebration on Sunday (January 28)

The carrying of Kavady symbolizes the carrying of one’s burden and surrendering them at the feet of Lord Murga.

Devotees adorned their kavadies and transported them to the temple grounds

The sacred flag, which had been raised on the first day of the celebrations, was then lowered, followed by a break in fasting with devotees partaking in food served at the temple.
