Mayor’s 2024 vision: “Basic service delivery is our focus”

The Municipality reiterates its commitment to continue working closely with the people of Newcastle to ensure that improved service delivery is available to all residents.

As we begin this new year full of hope and in high spirit, first and foremost I would like to send my best regards to the residents of Newcastle Municipality. The year, 2023 was a momentous year for every one of us, filled with ups and downs, however governed by the Ubuntu ,Solidarity and the Teachings of uMntwana wakwa Phindangene, we rose above and defeated the odds.

As the Municipality, we are fully aware and we remain cognisant of the difficulties we are still facing, especially where municipal finances are concerned. We will continue to work hard, showing our commitment bymaking sure we go beyond with any means possible in making sure that we serve this council in the behest of our people.

Before I proceed, I would like to also congratulate the Matric class of 2023 for their victory, their unwavering dedication to their future and the future of Newcastle did not go unnoticed. I strongly believe that by playing an active support role and investing in their education is synonymous to investing to the future of our growing town.

We will continue funding our promising first year students with registration fees, this is to make sure we ease the burden by lending a hand while they pull open the door to their future.

We will also continue to celebrate and honour our Top Achievers through our annual initiative, the Matric Excellence Awards, this is where, we as the municipality give well deserved recognition to all learners who attained splendid academic results in their final exams last year.

To the young minds, who have not succeeded in their examinations and who do not qualify for the supplementary examination please re-enrol at a school without delay and continue fighting for your future.

This year, as the Municipality we will continue working hand in hand with our people into making sure that improved service delivery is available for all residents, it is our main responsibility and aim to change the lives of our communities.

We have multiple projects that will benefit and address the needs of our communities from the length and breadth of this city.

Our focus for this financial year, is on offering the following:

– [ ] Improved access to Basic Services such as Water, Sanitation, Electricity, Housing and Waste removal services to our community.

– [ ] To reduce the housing backlog that we are currently facing .

– [ ] To establish new landfill site including management of the existing facility.

– [ ] Increase the number of households with access to potable water

– [ ] To improve water loss

– [ ] Installation of new water pipes

– [ ] Improve the quality of our roads and storm water infrastructure including sidewalks . I.e resealing, re gravelling and pothole patching.

– [ ] Improved access, maintenance and upgrading of parks, public and sports facilities.

Once again, I would like to encourage our residents to pay for the services for the Municipality to provide uninterrupted services.

Most importantly we will continue to facilitate economic development that will result in sustainable job creation and growth of our town.

Lastly, I want to remind and warn our residents against paying for non-existing jobs and tenders.

Municipal jobs are NOT for sale. The Municipality follows a fair and transparent recruitment and tender process. All Newcastle Municipality tender and job opportunities are advertised on the official website www.newcastle.gov.za and in local newspapers.

Ngokubambisana I Ntuthuko izofinyelela kuwo wonke  amakhona akulomkhandlu. (Together, development will reach all corners of this council)

Nginifisela unyaka omuhle nonezibusiso (I wish you a prosperous year ahead)

Siyathokoza (Thank you)

Newcastle Municipality Mayor

Cllr DX Dube
