IEB CEO highlights student pressure to perform during matric results announcement

The matric examination board announced the results of the class of 2023 while also putting a spotlight on the pressing issue of mental health matriculants often face.

Celebrations greeted the announcement of a 98.46 per cent matric pass rate achieved by South African private schools.

The results were announced early this morning by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB).

2285 learners sat down for the IEB examinations in Kwazulu-Natal.

CEO, Confidence Dikgole, congratulated the students who she said persevered through significant challenges such as the Covid-19 epidemic to achieve this remarkable result.

“The impressive performance of the class of 2023 amid these challenges reflects the dedication and tenacity of both learners and the entire teaching community,” commented Dikgole.

In her statement, she shifted focus to the mental and emotional pressures students endure in their academic careers that intensify during their final schooling year ‘when society puts incredible weight on the results students achieve during their matric year.’

“What is not often talked about is the tremendous pressure brought to bear on learners by society. Schools’ experience with young people points to the escalating mental health issues, which is perhaps one of the greatest challenges our youngsters face and does affect their ability to perform at their peak in a high-stakes examination, “she said.

“Mental well-being is directly linked to the stress society is placing on our young people to perform, to get top results and secure spots in top tertiary institutions. We need all learners to know that the world of education does not end after Matric, on the contrary, it is only the start of a myriad of doors and opportunities, “she continued

“We need to remove this pass-rate obsessed lens of competition, so we and they can start to see the success of their achievement with different eyes.”

She concluded by congratulating all those who passed but made sure to encourage those students who didn’t make the pass mark.

Congratulations to St. Dominics Newcastle whose students achieved an 100 % pass rate on their IEB exams.
