Municipal project gives glimmer of hope for light in Siyahlala-la

After years of darkness, Siyahlala-la residents now have a glimmer of hope after news that the long-awaited electrification project is finally getting underway.

Mayor Dube and Deputy Mayor Musa Thwala have officially launched the long-awaited project set to bring electricity to  over 500 homes in the informal settlement of Siyahlala-la.

Siyahlala-La is an informal settlement/ housing development on the doorstep of the Newcastle CBD, next to the Fairleigh suburb.

The living conditions of the people in the area are not conducive to a quality of life. Except for a small minority who own solar panels, the majority of people live without electricity.

Mayor Dube said ‘that the Newcastle leadership is working hard to making significant progress in those lives of those living in informal settlements.’

“This project is an example of the municipality’s perseverance in promoting development despite resource constraints. Despite these obstacles, we are committed to serving our community and will keep up our hard effort to guarantee that services are provided.”

Thwala, Deputy Mayor and Portfolio chairperson for Technical Services urged community members to work with the municipality and ward Cllr Singh to ensure the successful completion of this project.

“This project will not only ensure access to power but it will also create job opportunities for residents thus contributing immensely to local economic growth, “said Thwala.

The project aims to provide electricity to 500 units in the ward with completion pencilled in for May 2024.
