Church perseveres despite unforeseen setback

Olivier said the market day went well and he received positive feedback from residents who said they enjoyed the opportunity to socialise at the family-friendly event.

On the morning of Newcastle Community Church’s biannual market, organisers discovered the marquee they erected for the event was lying on the ground.

It seems the blustery wind of the day before was to blame for this unforeseen setback …But this did not dampen the unwavering spirit of the church’s congregants who remained resolute in ensuring the event was a success.

They had the tent back up within an hour and joyfully welcomed their supporters when the market opened at Majuba Lodge on Saturday, October 28.

The church’s co-pastor, Fritz Olivier, explained that fundraising events such as the market day are vital for replenishing the coffers that make it possible to conduct outreach projects which provide support for the most vulnerable in the community.

Outreach projects of the Newcastle Community Church include a weekly soup kitchen which feeds nearly 50 people at the Community Church in Osizweni, as well as food parcels that are donated to the Osizweni community through Jesus Life Ministry.

“The wind picked up again towards the late afternoon so we closed the market about an hour earlier than we initially intended to, but the market was a great success despite the challenges we faced,” Olivier concluded.

“We would like to say a huge thank you, from our side, to all the people who supported the market. We are looking forward to hosting an even bigger and better event next year so we can make a bigger impact in the community.”
