EPWP workers chain gates at the Department of Transport

A group of EPWP workers once again locked the gates of the Department of Transport Amajuba district offices in protest of the department's alleged dishonest hiring practices.

Following from last month’s report in the Newcastle Advertiser, the disgruntled workers have again spoken out against what they say ‘unjust hiring processes. ‘

“The people hired for the road worker positions have arrived and just as we suspected, they are the group from Ladysmith,” said EPWP worker, Mzwandile.

The group has demanded that the short listing procedure be made transparent. In order to make sure that the procedure “was fair and without corruption,” they also requested to view their assessments.

However, Instead of receiving a response from the department, the applicants found that the recruits had already started reporting for duty at the Department of Transport offices.

As a result, the group decided to lock the gates on Monday, November 6, following the submission of a third memorandum and the department’s lack of response.

They have since receiving the backing of a community forum organisation that has promised to help them get justice.

Newcastle Community Forum’s Thamsanqa Zuma said the EPWP workers called him on the Monday asking for assistance.

“This is so wrong .The Department has created realistic expectations that, as a result of the EPWP workers’ training there, they would be given preference for job opportunities should any become available.”

The workers have contacted the head of department, who has made it plain that he is not involved in the hiring process, and are now pleading with Kwazulu-Natal Transport MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, to step in.
