Community bids an emotional farewell to slain Inkosi

Hundreds gathered to say goodbye to Inkosi Siphamandla Khumalo and his wife, Ndlunkulu Thuthukile Khumalo, at a moving funeral service held in Utrecht on Saturday (November 4).

Khumalo (41) and his wife (34) were ambushed by unknown gunmen between Utrecht and Kingsley while travelling to Nquthu. Their four-year-old child survived the shooting.

The grieving Khumalo family was supported by Amajuba District Mayor Ndabuko Zulu, Emadlangeni Mayor Mzwakhe Buthelezi, Newcastle Municipality Council Speaker Thengi Zulu, MEC for CoGTA Bongi Sithole-Moloi and the local community.

Inkosi Khumalo served in the Amajuba District Municipality Council and will be remembered for his significant contributions to social stability and rural development in the Amajuba District region.

Speaking during the funeral, Amajuba District Mayor Ndabulo Zulu, issued a strong plea to communities, law enforcement agencies, and the government to work together to find the perpetrators of the attack.

“There is no justification for such inhumane and murderous acts against any human being. In the strongest terms possible, as the leadership of Amajuba District, we vehemently demand that the on-going violence against traditional leaders cease immediately.”

The killing of traditional leaders has been an on-going issue in KwaZulu-Natal.

Inkosi Khumalo had previously spoken out strongly about the killings of izinduna and Amakhosi, appealing for government involvement. He also survived a prior assassination attempt in November 2022, when unknown men pounced on him outside his home.

In a previous address during Human Rights Day celebrations, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Nomsa Dube-Ncube expressed concern over the high number of traditional leaders killed in the province.

She has since vowed to work closely with the traditional leadership structure to end the killings.
