Esperanza raises awareness about Down’s syndrome

Esperanza Special School celebrated Downs Syndrome Awareness Day on October 24 by hosting a blue and yellow themed party for all the students, past students and parents.

Joining the celebrations was by special guest, Rishen Rampersad, a person born with Downs Syndrome. Accompanied by his doting mother, Rishen looked dapper in his blue suit

Rishen’s mother, Shareena Rameprsad, was keen to clear any misconceptions about children with Downs’s syndrome in a society where the disease is stigmatised.

“My child is indeed a blessing. He is self-sufficient, patient, and extremely kind. As you can see, he’s very friendly and entertaining,” she told those gathered.

She advised parents to treat children born with Downs’s Syndrome as any other children.

“I urge parents to take the children to school so they can learn discipline and to be independent. Do not keep them at home, be extremely patient and treat them as you would any other ‘normal’ child.”

Jennifer Pillay, principal of Esperanza Special Needs School, commended her tireless staff for making the day possible. She also thanked all the guests and children for making the event such a success
