Child Welfare AGM highlights organisations good work despite challenges

The organisation continues to service the community despite the harsh economic climate that has negatively affected many NPOs in the country.

Last week’s annual general meeting of Child Welfare Newcastle heard how the group is ‘paddling hard to keep their heads above water’ as mounting costs continue to effect.

Chairperson Morris Gajoo began by   President Nelson Mandela’s speech when accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 where he eloquently spoke on the vision for the children of South Africa, Gajoo said:

“Child Welfare aspires to make that legacy more real by helping those struggling with poverty, deprivation and abuse. His vision was that children should live lives free of hunger, disease, molestation and abuse.

“This is the vision that has animated the work of Newcastle Child Welfare, which is generally the first port of call for children in need of help because of abandonment, abuse, neglect or assault.”

Turning to the financial report prepared by Akram and Peer, Gajoo noted that the organisation is not in the red but is clearly doing all it can to survive.

The financial audit shows that Child Welfare’s expenses surpass its income due to escalating costs of stationary, petrol and other miscellaneous costs, required to carry out activities as prescribed by the Department of Social Development.

Farieda Mia, head of Child Welfare Newcastle, and said in her social workers report that 1500 beneficiaries have already come through the offices already, showing that social ills are at an all time high.

She also praised the hard work of the organisation’s social workers who go beyond their duties, despite the financial challenges.

The current board have been re-elected in order to retain stability as the organisation continues to weather the tough economic climate. The meeting was concluded with Gajoo thanking his colleagues for their hard work and dedication to Child Welfare.
