Mind Your Math’ co-founder gives back to the Dundee community

Co-partners Wandile Khumalo and Lucky Ndlovu started this company back at university.

As a non-government organisation, ‘Mind Your Math’ has been helping learners through the tutoring of physical science and maths since 2019.
With the help of a private entity, co-founder Wandile Khumalo recently nominated two local schools – Dundee Secondary School and Ethangeni Combined School – to help the matrics with their physics and maths. A total of 84 learners benefited from the free tutoring that happened over a 14-week period on Saturdays.

“We also assisted the learners’ Central Application Office (CAO) application forms and paid R250 for each learner for their applications,” explained Wandile.

He continued by saying that during this programme, they were able to provide basic stationery and lunch, daily, for the attendees. “This was just an incentive to make sure they attend classes and don’t have to worry about hunger, knowing that some of the learners come from destitute homes,” said Wandile.
He added that, in the beginning, it was a bit of a struggle tutoring such a large number… But with the help of other tutors from ‘Mind Your Math’, they were able to do it effortlessly.
Wandile and Lucky Ndlovu started this company back at university during the pandemic when they saw a need for learners to continue studying even though schools at the time were closed because of Covid-19.
“I was still a student myself and ‘Mind Your Math’ literally was born in my bedroom. Since then, we have done online tutoring for Dundee learners and haven’t looked back since,” said Wandile.
He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Computer Sciences, and through the Allan Gray Foundation, he was able to be part of the Validation and Creation Programme, which taught him a lot about incorporating cutting edge tech. This then gave birth to his entrepreneurial idea of Mind Bot, which he has been working on for the past year and a half and will be launching soon. “Mind Bot is a software programme that will be assisting learners in the comfort of their home through online tutoring and hopefully one day it can be incorporated into school programmes,” explained Wandile. He continued by saying that he would test out the software with learners within his programme before making it accessible to everyone else.
Local learners can book an appointment for maths and physical science tutoring with Wandile on 076 030 5362 or visit www.mindyourmath.co.za for enquiries.
“We are open to working with any other tutors in the area, so let’s make tutoring a community thing.”
