Amajuba Film Festival paves the way for local talent

By offering exposure and access to varied industries, the festival also helped to promote people from historically disadvantaged communities in the area.

The Amajuba Film Festival (AFF), in collaboration with the KZN Film Commission, National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), and Face of the Earth (FOE) Foundation NPO, hosted the third edition of the annual Amajuba Film Festival from October 5 – 7.

Prior to the festival, the Foundation hosted a special media briefing at the Seda boardroom on Scott Street on Thursday (October 5).

Samukelisiwe Sibisi, FEO founder, said the festival will treat the Amajuba district to a series of workshops, documentaries, short films, and other engaging content from a variety of filmmakers.

The festival was founded to provide a platform for local and international filmmakers to showcase films produced between 2019 to date.

This year the theme of the festival was fusing art, media and technology.

The reasoning for this was that Sibisi believed that together, these three core sectors played a pivotal role ensuring the success of the festival.

The Amajuba Film Festival is a one-of-a-kind film festival in Newcastle. This platform allows filmmakers and the general public to discuss trends and issues affecting their society and communities.

The festival also stimulated and served as a platform to educate, entertain, and inform the audience on social, art, business, political and other issues.

The main attractions were feature and short films, workshops, and discussions about digitising the film industry/sector.

The festival also helped to advance people from historically disadvantaged communities in the area by providing exposure and access to diverse industries, as well as creating job opportunities for Newcastle’s youth.

Festival assistants gained experience in festival management, including technical skills (audio and visual) and event management.

Zinhle Mtshali, project manager of the festival, then discussed the three-day programme informing guests what they could look forward to while at the festival before, Minenhle Gumbi, film festival public relations and himself a local film-maker, explained that people could follow the festival on all social media platforms.

“The Amajuba Film Festival is grateful to its partners and stakeholders, including the KZN Film Commission, the National Film and Video Foundation, GT500, Radio 101, all Amajuba District Local Municipalities, and every stakeholder, investor and partner.”
