Emadlangeni accident claims seven lives.

The Amajuba district was rocked by the horrible tragedy that occurred early on Saturday morning in the Emadlangeni area, leaving at least seven people dead and numerous others injured.

The accident involved a truck carrying 54 people that were on their way to a wedding happened between Mbathani to Groenvlei road.

According to official accounts, six people were confirmed dead at the scene, while a seventh person was proclaimed dead at Madadeni Hospital.

The injured were visited at the Madadeni and Nieyemer Hospital by Newcastle mayor, Xolani Dube and eMadlangeni mayor M.L. Buthelezi.

Emadlangeni Mayor, M.L. Buthelezi also visited the bereaved families to pay his respects.

Reports are that four of the seven people that died were learners from Groetvlei Combined School. A total of 11 students were injured in the accident.

The KZN MEC for Education, Mbali Frazer commented on the matter saying:

“I was unpleasantly surprised to receive such daunting news of the tragic passing and injury of our learners this morning. I am constantly praying for our children’s safety and such heart breaking news deeply saddens me, both as parents and the Department because we at all times anticipate a bright future for all out learners.”

 

A memorial service will be held for the deceased on Thursday at the Kwa-Hatting area, ward 6 from 09:00 am.

Police are currently investigating charges of culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving.
