Spreading awareness about Alzheimer’s at old age home

Some of the symptoms include sleep walking and memory loss, often falsely attributed to witchcraft

The Department of Social Development, together with the Department of Health, held an Alzheimer’s awareness campaign on Thursday, September 21.

The event was held at the old age home based at the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Mission (Amakhasi) in Uitval.

The aim was to teach the community about the symptoms of this disease, which normally affects elderly citizens, and also the treatment once diagnosed.

Social worker Mrs Nonsikelelo Mabele said the event was very successful.

“We, as social workers, encourage such events because it is our job to protect the vulnerable. We also do home visits, where we raise awareness and teach the relatives of the elderly how to take care of them. We wish to spread awareness to every corner and we hope that the incidents whereby old people are killed as a result of being falsely accused of witchcraft will come to an end,” said Mabele.
