College students cry foul over trade certificates

The students claim that despite completing their trade tests over a year ago they are yet to receive their trade certificates from the College.

Sthembiso Nkabinde, Bhekokuhle Mntambo and Melusi Buthelezi are graduates who participated in the Majuba TVET Colleges boilermaker apprenticeship programme in 2019.

The group claims that after completing the programme, they were not issued trade certificates.

“When we approached Majuba about the problem, we were passed from pillar to post.” We’re constantly going to their offices to see how far they’ve gotten with getting us our certificates, but we’ve made no progress so far,” said Mntambo.

The group lament that this situation has negatively affected their employment prospects.

“Our lives have come to a halt,” Buthelezi lamented. “We can’t get jobs in our field because we don’t have the paperwork proving we’re qualified.

The Newcastle Advertiser approached the College who confirmed knowledge of the situation but emphasized the matter is beyond the college’s control.

Campus manager of the Newcastle Training Centre Thami Ngwenya said, “We empathize with the plight of the candidates. It is untrue that Majuba College is not doing anything about it. The process is dependent on the internal SETA processes and timelines which Majuba is not in control of.”
