Sad end to this ‘Glencoe movie’

The building, which is something of a landmark in the town, is now in a state of neglect and what was previously the 'bug house hall' is filled with rubbish.

Nostalgia hung heavy in the air when long-time Glencoe resident Joost Joubert recounted his memories of watching movies and entertaining girlfriends with ice-cream at the now abandoned Glencoe railway institute in Biggar Street. The building, which is something of a landmark in the town, is now in a state of neglect and what was previously the ‘bug house hall’ is filled with rubbish.
Joost says he still cannot understand why it closed down, as ‘the movie house was packed every Friday and Saturday’.
“People had to queue to get their tickets. There was also a ‘snoepie’ where you could buy cool drinks and ice-cream, but those wanting a cigarette would have to go to the cafĂ© across the road,” he recalled.
Joost and his cousin assisted the projectionist in showing the movies, with cowboy and action films being firm favourites. Greg Roberts, writing on the Facebook page ‘I used to live in Glencoe’, said he has no idea when the Institute was built (in Biggar Street North) but his first memory was when his father returned from World War 2 in mid 1945.

There was the inside of the cinema which was packed especially on Fridays and Saturdays… everything has since been ripped out and the hall is filled with rubbish.
