Newcastle Crisis centre’s Survivors Day celebrates fighters of Gender based violence

The Newcastle crisis centre held a survivors day in honour of Mandela Day on July 18.

The manager of the Crisis Centre, Mary Dobbie, invited survivors of abuse who had previously sought shelter at the centre, as well as Child Welfare SA and SAPS.

While learning more about the fight against gender-based violence in the Amajuba district, guests were treated to food and drinks provided by Boston College and Pick n Pay. The crisis centre distributed gifts, and three lucky ladies received Boston College’s employment readiness programme courses.

“The scourge of GBV is really high, with about 60-70 cases reported monthly, especially during holiday times,” says Newcastle centre social worker Jabu Makhoba.

In terms of success stories, Mary says, “We definitely have women who have left abusive situations and have never returned. They are thriving, have restarted their lives, and are in good health. There is life after abuse; you must get out before it is too late.”
