Newcastle SPCA hosts its 2023 annual general meeting

The Newcastle SPCA held their annual general meeting at Leighton Courts on York Street on Tuesday (June 20).

A total of 163 animal cruelty cases were investigated, resulting in two court cases that are currently pending. This was said when the Newcastle SPCA recently held their annual general meeting.

Leighton Chetty, SPCA chairman, told the meeting these cases comprised a total of 906 animals being inspected during 109 routine inspections.

He further mentioned that a total of 1486 animals had passed through the SPCA’s doors over the past year.

These consisted of cats, dogs, rabbits, rats, and even a baboon.

Chetty outlined the SPCA’s operating rules, which included protecting the freedom of hunger and thirst, the freedom from suffering, damage, and neglect, and the ability to display natural animal behaviours at all times without fear of being hurt.

Heather Gero said as a registered NPO and PBO, those making donations to the SPCA and claim back from SARS.

“We are also the only legal and registered animal welfare organisation in the area,” she said.

She thanked the community at large for ‘the amazing support they have given the SPCA, especially with the 28 dogs that were recently rescued.’
