Uniting for a better quality of life for the disabled

The meeting emphasised the crucial role of community involvement in promoting equality and celebrating diversity within the local area

The Disability Forum Ward 13 (DFW13) held its second quarterly meeting at the Agra Library on Monday (June 12), gathering various departments and stakeholders to discuss ways to improve the quality of life for disabled individuals in the Alfred Duma Local Municipality area.

The participants included the Department of Education, Public Safety, Alfred Duma Local Municipality Disability Forum, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), AI-Imdaad Foundation, Dr Joseph Shabalala Foundation, Hospice, Inkanyezi Special Needs School, Juana Maria Frail Aged Home and disabled people from other wards.

Mr Abed Karrim from the Al-Imdaad Foundation is a vital and vibrant NGO stakeholder who has played a significant role in steering DFW13 in the right direction. His contributions have been instrumental in bringing about positive changes and improvements to the forum. Under his leadership, the forum has taken great strides in advocating for the rights of people with disabilities and promoting inclusivity.

Karrim’s work highlights the importance of stakeholder involvement and support in creating meaningful change in communities. His dedication and commitment to the forum serves as an inspiration to others and demonstrates the impact that one person can have on a community.

Mr SM Khumalo briefed the house of delegates on the function of SASSA and upcoming changes within the organisation. He discussed the various stages of the application process and highlighted the efficient service that SASSA provides in reducing influx and waiting time. Khumalo also emphasised the importance of partnership with other stakeholders and the need to combat scams by checking with SASSA for authentic information.

The briefing served as a reminder of the critical role that SASSA plays in providing social security to vulnerable South Africans. It also highlighted the need for continued support and collaboration to ensure that SASSA can carry out its mandate effectively.
