Gruesome discovery of decapitated body

Another baffling discovery was blood-stained money notes to the value of R1000, found next to the body

A 35-year-old woman was found decapitated in Hlobane last week.
This comes after Maria Buthelezi was reported missing on May 19 at Hlobane police station. The gruesome discovery of her body was made by a community member who was looking for fire wood.
When police arrived at the scene, the head was not close by. However, upon combing the area, the head was found approximately 150 metres away.
Members of the Vryheid Local Crime Record Centre (LCRC), together with investigating officers from Hlobane, attended the scene to gather evidence. According to police, it is not known at this stage when or how the head was removed from the body. The SAPS say that the possibility exists that animals could be the ‘culprits’, but this is highly unlikely. Further investigations revealed an open cut wound where maggots were found on the decomposed body. Due to the state of decomposition, the authorities are also not certain if the eyes or lips were removed, which could indicate a ‘muti-related’ murder.
Another baffling discovery was blood-stained money notes to the value of R1000, found next to the body. People in the area say that the deceased woman was allegedly mentally disturbed. The body and head were sent for a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death.
